What's New in Talsim 5

Contents Prev Top Next More

This page highlights key changes and improvements introduced in Talsim 5 compared to previous versions, including the redesigned user interface and new technical capabilities.

The new Talsim 5 represents a major evolution in the development of the Talsim-NG 4 hydrological modeling software. Building on over two decades of experience and feedback from users in water management practice, this new version introduces a completely redesigned user interface and a modernized data architecture, while retaining the proven simulation engine at its core.

This chapter outlines the major improvements, changes, and continuities in Talsim to help both new and returning users understand what’s new — and what remains familiar.

✨ Highlights of the new Talsim

🖥️ New Graphical User Interface

The new Talsim introduces a fully redesigned, modernized GUI focused on usability, clarity, and performance.

Interactive, georeferenced system map
View and manipulate the system structure directly on a map, including the ability to import and overlay custom geospatial data.

Unified layout for system elements
All system components and their parameters now follow a consistent input format, making navigation and data entry more efficient.

Tree views and search functions
Navigate large and complex system models with powerful search tools and clear hierarchical overviews.

Redesigned interactive windows
All dialog and editing windows have been streamlined and improved for clarity and ease of use.

Flexible "BulkEdit" mode
Edit multiple parameters or elements at once, significantly speeding up data maintenance tasks.

Interactive diagram views
Analyze functions, time series, and simulation results in a visual and interactive format.

🛠️ Modern Technology and Data Handling

The new Talsim is built on modern development platforms, ensuring better performance, maintainability, and integration potential.

Built using C# and Microsoft .NET (WPF)
A robust foundation for future development and user interface innovation.

Modern UI control libraries
Enables smoother interactions, better layout responsiveness, and advanced controls.

SQLite database format for project files
Project data is now stored in lightweight, widely supported SQLite databases — improving portability, performance, and integration.

⚙️ What Hasn’t Changed

While the user interface has been completely overhauled, the new Talsim continues to rely on the proven Talsim simulation engine — ensuring compatibility, reliability, and consistency of results.

Same core simulation logic
All existing models and workflows that rely on the calculation core remain valid.

Server component unchanged
the new Talsim continues to communicate with existing Talsim servers, ensuring a smooth transition and compatibility in operational environments.

Operational automation remains supported
Applications using the simulation kernel in headless or automated operation are not affected by the interface changes.

🔄 Transition and Development Phase

The new Talsim has been in active development for some time and is now at the end of its internal testing phase at Sydro Consult GmbH. During this phase:

Final refinements to the software are being made.

New features and user interface enhancements will continue to be introduced.

The documentation, including this manual, will be regularly updated to reflect new capabilities and best practices.

Users are encouraged to check section What's new in this manual to stay informed about changes, additions, and improvements to the user manual.
