Structural changes in the natural river basin and the operation of water resources structures can have a significant influence on the water balance and must therefore be able to be represented in a river basin model. In reality there are a multitude of hydraulic structures, such as canals, dams, flood control reservoirs, stormwater retention basins, abstraction and discharge structures, weirs, hydroelectric power plants, etc. In the river basin model Talsim-NG these structures can be abstracted and simulated using the following four system elements: | |||

The system elements storage and diversion offer the possibility to control their outputs with complex operating rules. In Talsim-NG hydroelectric power plants can be simulated using the storage system element. If a run-of-river hydroelectric plant is to be needs to be simulated, the corresponding water course section must be defined as a storage.
