The determination of the characteristics and parameters is very different. Some are known (e.g. pipe diameter of a circular channel), others require extensive preliminary work in a GIS (e.g. the subdivision of a subcatchment area using soil maps, land use maps and the gradient determined from the DEM into hydrologically similarly reacting areas, the elementary areas).

Die Ermittlung der Kenngrößen und Parameter gestaltet sich dabei sehr unterschiedlich. Manche sind bekannt (z.B. Rohrdurchmesser eines Kreiskanals), andere erfordern aufwendige Vorarbeiten in einem GIS (z.B. die Unterteilung eines Teileinzugsgebiets mithilfe von Bodenkarten, Landnutzungskarten und dem aus dem DGM ermittelten Gefälle in hydrologisch ähnlich reagierende Gebiete, den Elementarflächen).
